Nnewi—The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has said the continued
incarceration of its leader and Director of Radio Biafra, Mr. Nnamdi
Kanu is not because of any alleged offense he was said to have
committed, but to impress President Muhammadu Buhari.
It alleged that President Buhari had on December 30, 2015, during his
maiden Presidential Media Chat foreclosed the possibility of releasing
Kanu in his statement during the chat and that those still holding Kanu
even after courts have granted him bail are just doing the bidding of
the President.
IPOB in a statement by its spokespersons, Dr. Ikenna Chinaka and Iyom
Grace Ukpai, accused President Buhari of sounding autocratic in that
media chat, with total disregard to the judicial establishment in
Nigeria and to the utter disdain and sanctity of the constitution.
“The President declared before a stunned civilized world that an
‘accused’ person that a court of law granted bail is undeserving to be
freed despite the fact that such bails were granted by a court of
competent jurisdiction.”
IPOB statement titled, “The trial of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Justice Binta
Nyako and the Judgment of God.” said “the order made by Justice Ademola
of the Federal High Court to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally is
still subsisting and has neither been appealed by the agents of All
Progressives Congress, APC, led government of President Buhari, vacated
or set aside.
“Instead of the Federal Government to vacate the order, they resorted to
using Justice Nyako to achieve the dictates of the President in the
case against Kanu and others by trying to invoke the principles of
Sharia law in a matter pending before a Common Law, just to impress her
kinsman whose language and disposition have always been to continue to
detain Mr. Kanu and others being tried with him.
“IPOB worldwide is implacably opposed to the adoption of elements of
Sharia Law in the trial of our leader and other Biafrans and Justice
Nyako must bear the following in mind, if she is to continue presiding
over the matter
